There are seventeen laws in the official English soccer rules handbook; these rules are often broadly defined so they are a little bit flexible. Teams have a goalie, who is the only player who can use their hands or arms when playing the ball, who protects their goal and defends it. Then you have the defenders, who stay by themselves side of the field and make an effort to defend the goal from offensive players. There are also the midfielders, who stay in the middle of the pitch and can function as either offensive or defensive players; and forwards, who are the offensive players that score the objectives. Every British soccer team needs these kinds of competitors if they have any hope of being successful.
